London’s East End is famous for its artists, and never more so than now, when nearby Hoxton is filling up with trendy galleries and next-door Vyner Street is a mecca for those in the know. Town Hall Hotel runs a curated project which commissions young, up-and-coming artists to create site-specific pieces for this beautiful building. It is also a nod to our heritage – the original builders of THH commissioned the best artists and sculptors of the day to adorn the building.

Guests walking along a corridor may do a double-take at the exquisite inlaid marquetry – showing some ladies involved in another trade for which Bethnal Green was once well-known… Or they may look up to see the gorgeous leaf chandelier, complete with stuffed owl, or the fantastic moose carpet sculpture.

Judged by a prestigious panel, this project showcases the best of what today’s young East End artists have to offer and will continue with new commissions in 2011.

Some of the most exciting artists in the world live and work in London's East End - they have created remarkable works of art in response to the unique characteristics of this heritage site. These commissions offer a cultural legacy for the future.
